Self Timer the Original Selfie

Untitled photo

Does Family Photography Matter?

Pictured above is not a well set up photograph. My dad, my brother, and myself are not frolicking in the field during golden hour. We are not in matching outfits. Truth be told it was Christmas morning and we hadn't even brushed our teeth. Yet, I cherish this picture. My father set up his Minolta X-370 and put it on self timer and took this one photograph. My brother passed away in 2005. I lost my father unexpectedly in 2013, just nine days after giving birth to my youngest daughter.

Three Generations of Men

Untitled photo

This photograph was captured quickly at the end of a wedding in Nevada. This is the only photograph I have of my grandfather, my father, and my brother together. My grandfather  passed away in 2015.

My Cousin and his Best Friend

Untitled photo

My cousin recently passed away unexpectedly of a heart condition. I have not seen him since I was a child. I haven't really seen anyone in the past two years due to Covid. We have lost a lot of time with our loved ones being afraid and trying to keep others safe but truth be told when it is your time to go, it is your time to go and there is nothing that anyone can do to prevent you from dying.

I can't go back. I can't make up the lost time but I can start right now and make plans with my family and friends. I can cherish the breaths I have left in my lungs by making memories with the people I love. And while I'm at it I'm going to take some pictures to leave behind for the ones that I will leave behind on this earth.

Family Photography matters to your children and their children and their children. Print your pictures, hang them up on the wall, and put them in an album. Tell stories about the loved ones you have lost and make special memories with the ones you have left. Take the pictures. It doesn't matter if they are polaroid's or professional photographs. One day it will be all they have left. So yes... it matters.
